How much do you generate from affiliate commissions?

I am just kinda curious how much one can earn from affiliate commissions and whether it is really worth the effort going through all these optimization to gain traffic? Any insights?

You can make nice money this way.... but.... affiliate webmasters are some of the smartest people around. It sounds like you want to take these folks on in direct competition. You can make lots of money if you are good at figuring out how to beat very smart people who will really hammer back at you if you reach for their wallet.

Go for it if you are serious about what you do and are very smart and are willing to work very hard.

If you have a site that gets lots of traffic for a particular theme you can add affiliate links or adsense and make nice money that way too. But, you need to be smart here too and do this marketing in a way that will gain clicks and not stink up your site.

it's not my intention to get affiliate webmasters to compete among themselves as to who earns the most buck around... i prob tot the figures would serve as a good motivational tool to those newbies like me who wants to use the internet to earn an extra income...

but silly me, who would want to share such confidential information around.. btw, EGOL thks for sharing your thoughts...

If you are good at running affiliate websites your definition of "extra income" will change significantly. Lots of affiliates earn $xx,xxx per month and some even more.

I have heard of webmasters creating niche sites and earning quite an income from it. Personally, I have worked on whatever that is recommended, optimizing the sites, requesting link exchanges, writing articles but after almost close to 3-4 months, my traffic is still a trickle and income $0... sigh... it makes one wonder whether is it worthwhile to go through all the effort...

LOTS of people generate nice income from niche sites. Your site is still very new and it takes a while to get it into the search engines and ranking.

There are several problems that you need to solve to make any money and the first of those is getting a source of good content for your site. Some people write their own content - that's what I do and there is nothing more valuable than building content in on a topic that you have a strong interest and lots of knowledge. I have a PhD in the field where most of my sites theme and have been using the products that are sold there for over 40 years - so writing content is easy for me.

Next you need to get your site ready for the search engines. Check out donna's post about this for a good start....
http://forums.seochat.com/t8704/s.html

After that you need inbound links from sites related to your topic. If you have done a good job at creating good content then people who own those sites will WANT to link to you.

After traffic is flowing in you also need to worry about converting sales. I suggest the book "Don't Make Me Think" by Krug... lots of good ideas there about how to make your site user friendly and get visitors to see and DO the things that are important for your success.

Finally, sometimes it takes a couple of shots to find something that works. Most of the new things that I try don't work as well as I had hoped. But I either adapt these or abandon them and focus on what I have found works.

A good start point is Google AdSense, they convert very well for me and work with almost any site theme and a lot of different languages. Finding a niche market is a very good idea but not always easy. In any case don't start (if you don't have a big SEO experience or important advertising resources) with very popular sites theme (like viagra, insurance, etc), it is very hard to get search engines traffic for very competitive terms.

Everyone will have their own recipe for riches; make a solid plan and follow through with it. Some, like EGOL, understand their industry inside and out. Some recommend, like Cristi, to start with a weak market and work till you get the hang of it. Some crazy people, like myself, started in the hypercompetitive loans industry. If you're committed to learning, taking a few knocks, and being it for the long-haul, you'll survive. Otherwise, someone else will eat your lunch.

One thing to add to this if you are starting out. You probably know yourself and if you have the type of determination shown above, your greatest mistake might be underestimating yourself.

An excellent book - try to use what you learn from reading it to find affiliate schemes that fit in with what you learn, or can be adapted to.
