Does having adsense ads make a website commercial?
Does having google adsense on your website make it a commercial site, if that is the only money making scheme you have on the pages?
There are a lot of scripts and software that are available for use on the web - many are free, but cost money if they are used on a commercial site.

It does, according to Zeal* editors. Well, they** would turn a blind eye if the ads were subtle and not plastered all over the site/pages.
I think the rest of the web is a bit more forgiving though - unless you have 3 ad blocks, a link unit and a referral button on every page including your About-Us and your custom 404    * alas, Zeal has been "discontinued" ** I should have said "we" instead of "they" LOL
