I find they work better if you make your own rather than the one's provided by the merchant, this way you can make them blend in with the look of your site.

I'm not sure banners ever worked......

The usability eye-tracking studies done by Jacob Nielsen have shown pretty conclusively that people have "banner blindness". They ignore anything on a web page that looks like a banner. Plain text links are far more effective.

Not that you won't get any clicks - just that there are more effective ad methods.

Depends on what you have to offer. If you have something graphic to offer - games, stock photos, etc., banners will do just fine. What's annoying are the rapid animations, lols.

Just think of it this way, if it weren't effective Yahoo wouldn't be using them

Nowadays people just tend to Adblock banners. But it really depends for me...there's those generic "pin the tail on the donkey" kind of banners and those are annoying and I usually just block them. But if the banner looks professional and doesn't take too long loading I leave it there and I do look at it.

That's true.

I spent ages trying to debug a Wordpress theme I was using that was showing up blank. In the end it turned out that the masthead was the same size as a banner and my Adblocker was zapping it.

Wink

I think banners will be effective if they are well-designed. I, myself get attracted in banners with eye-catchy design.
