Market Research = the process of gathering, analyzing and interpreting information about a market; about a product or service to be offered for sale in that market; and about the past, present and potential customers for the product or service.
Competitive Research, I am not sure what you mean exactly. I hear this used in various ways. I use this term when I am doing specific research on a competitor. How they are positioning, marketing and selling their products or services. This is completely different from market research.
