Commission for first sale only?
Ok - I'm wanting to know how most affiliate programs get setup. And how do the big successful companies do it... like amazon - ebay... google.. etc...
Say I have an affiliate, s/he sends me a surfer who buys some products... the affiliate gets commission... NOw, the buyer loves the product, and buys monthly... but the next purchases are made through the site directly - without an affiliate link - They happened to bookmark the site. Should the affiliate continue to get paid for subsequent sales, or is this not the standard practice? |

Most affiliate programs do not offer life-time earnings of the customer; for one, it can be tricky when the surfer comes in through a different affiliate next time -- for another, it gets expensive.
Now, if the surfer comes through that affiliate each time, then sure, give him/her credit. If the surfer comes through the affiliate once, and then returns to YOUR site next time...your call. I've noticed some smaller affiliate programs that offer the life-time approach, but they usually have to change their compensation model after running the program for a few years; otherwise, those margins can get pretty thin.
