Best Paying Adsense
This may be a really obvious thing, but:
On the sponsored ads for Adwords in search results, the highest bid gets to the top position. It stands to reason that adsense would follow the same logic. If this is true, would it be adviseable to have less adsense on a page in order to force only the best paying ads to show? In that, I mean if you have 3 adsense content units on a page with multiple ads on each unit, are you degrading your chances for the best paying click? Also, with sidebars, and other css configurations, does Adsense know which ads are in the best positions on the page? Curious.

Berg,
I've done LOTS of adsense experimenting. First... From what I see you want the first adsense unit in your CODE to be in the most highly visible position. I believe the the premium ads are served to that unit. Second... if you have space on your page use all three of the regular ad units. Some of the ads will earn money just for being displayed and you might be surprised at the income you get from bottom of the page. Third... place TWO search boxes on each page. Search monetizes very well for me. I have two search boxes above the fold... used to have one but when I went to two the number of searches went up by 50% or more. Fourth... experiment with lots of page lay-outs. I've made more from changing page lay-outs over and over - some pages have been through 10-20 different formats to get max yield without stinking up the site with too many ads. Fifth... addressing your plateau.... if you have lots of return traffic your income can shrink over time because the same ads are being shown. So, I vary the color and placements of the ads and that boosts the income temporarily... then you change it again. Also, if you are in a small niche and you double your traffic that can consume a lot of the ad budgets that people are spending. Finally... there could be smart people bidding on your ads and if they see that traffic from your site does not perform they lower their bid or drop your site from their campaign.

1st- That's what I expected.
2nd- I'm doing that now. Ads placed in my content as opposed to the menu side bar do much better for me. But I also think that those come up first in the code. I'll have to check. 3rd- I'll have to try that. I'll definitely have to change the layout to make this happen. 4th- I've been really fearful of changing the layout. I know it's stupid and ultra-conservative. Time to take some risks. 5th- No, on the return traffic. I have a very high percentage of new visits. Yes, I work in niches inside a niche and that could be the problem. Though my general niche involves billions of dollars in spending per year, I think most of the advertising goes to noncontent adwords, and nonweb related materials. I'll just have to continue on the path of winning over the #1 keyword in my industry. Mammoth task, but I'm trying. (Also, I'm going to begin tackling potential advertisers directly.) Thank you again, and I'll keep you posted as to the results of my changes. |

I think
Use Only 1 Adsense Unit with in the highest click rate position is the best thing for the website. Because It will select the highest paying Ads to display in the site. |

IF you place two ad units on the page I believe that you will make more money... and if you use three you will make more still.

I have 3 adsense blocks and one search now. Previously, I had 2 on some, 3 on others, and no search. I also made the adsense titles stand out a bit more than before.
All of this was finished yesterday. I'll report back in a week to let everyone know whether it helped up my revenue. Thanks |

You can use up to 3 ad units in your site. I also used 3 ads and I placed it on top of my post. It works, I earned dollars a day.

I use adsense and I find that different strategies work with different sites
Yes it is true that the top ad unit has the highest click value However you want to give your visitors more than one opportunity to click on your ads Back to my first point though, I really think that on each and every site you need to test different ad formats and different positions to see which works the best I think the gurus call this 'testing' Good luck |

Quick update. I did a lot of shifting around.
1. I added more content ads, totaling 3 on each page. 2. I changed the look of each ad to make it look more clickable. 3. I added 1 search bar for every page. So far I'm seeing a small increase in revenue. The search was a great idea. It seems it's paying better per click than my other ads (probably because of the format with highest cost ads up top.) There are a lot of factors involved, and it's difficult for me to really discern one change from another, but it is showing an increase overall. I'll post back when i've had a month of watching. |

Thanks for the update.... glad to hear you have a little more money coming in. Try another search box.... I got a 50% increase in search revenue by having two above the fold. no kidding.

no kidding, huh? Alright. I thought it would be a bit redundant, but since my first box is on a white background that kinda blends in, I think you're right about adding another a little lower over my left side column navigation over a darker background.
So far, my click through isn't huge for the search, but the revenue per click is twice that of any of the content stuff. Another good thing about the search is that if they don't click through to the ads, they're going to one of my pages (or bouncing...) I'll look more into the bounce and see what's been going on so far. Thanks. I'll try this and report back. Last edited by THE BERG : July 9th, 2008 at 05:22 PM. |
