Affiliate tracking software and solutions

I would like to create an affiliate program for my site, it is a subscription news site, and I'm looking for the best possible solution for creating an affiliate program.
Obviously I would like it to be a low cost solution but if I have to pay more to get a quality solution I would be willing.
I'm interested in hearing from both merchants who have setup an affiliate program as well as those are afiliate marketers.

I do lots of consulting and work with tons of affiliates and one of the most important considerations in selecting tracking software, is to use a program that partners not only trust, but are used to - so it's easier & faster for them to get links and check stats.
